Who is Laufey?

Laufey, better known as Faye, is the protagonist of God of War Laufey. She is a Jotunn from Jotunheim, wife of Kratos, and mother of Atreus, but players know her for something even bigger: she is the unseen hand behind almost every major turn in the Norse saga.

God of War Laufey finally pushes her into the foreground. Instead of hearing about her through Kratos, Atreus, and old prophecies, players get a direct look at the warrior, strategist, and force of will the earlier games kept just out of reach.

Background & Lore

Faye's past was shrouded in mystery throughout God of War (2018) and Ragnarök. Key facts established in the series:

  • A Giant of Jotunheim, also known as "The Guardian"
  • Married to Kratos and mother of Atreus (Loki)
  • Had the gift of prophecy and shaped her choices around what she foresaw
  • Her final wish was for her ashes to be spread at the highest peak of all realms
  • She is remembered for a legendary clash with Thor before the events of 2018
  • She deliberately left behind markers and clues for Kratos and Atreus to follow

Abilities & Combat Style

Based on the State of Play reveal, Faye's combat style reads as fast, controlled, and much less brute-force than Kratos. Key early takeaways:

  • Speed — Quicker footwork, faster recoveries, and more constant motion
  • Magic — Runic or Giant-flavored effects seem baked into her offense
  • Axe Control — The Leviathan Axe looks familiar, but the rhythm around it feels different in Faye's hands
  • Tempo — The footage suggests finesse and timing over Kratos-style overpowering hits

Role in the God of War Series

Faye's importance to the God of War series is hard to overstate. Even when she was off-screen, her decisions drove the entire Norse arc:

  • In God of War (2018), her final wish sets the entire journey in motion
  • In Ragnarök, her prophecy and planning continue to guide Kratos and Atreus
  • In God of War Laufey, that influence finally becomes the point of view instead of the backstory
