Phranque
Faye's strange new companion, voiced by Jack Quaid, and one of the reveal's biggest wild cards.
Who is Phranque?
Phranque is a new companion introduced alongside Laufey (Faye) in the June 2026 State of Play reveal. The footage frames Phranque as a small, fluid-bodied ally that sticks close to Faye in both traversal and combat, though the exact nature of the character is still one of the reveal's biggest mysteries.
Phranque was one of the very first characters Cory Barlog established when building Laufey — alongside Faye herself. In a WCCFTech interview, Ariel Lawrence confirmed that Phranque and Faye were the two characters Barlog “came to the table with from the very beginning,” making Phranque not a late addition but a foundational part of the game's concept.
Visually, Phranque is a gelatinous cube — a form that immediately sparked debate. Some fans saw a D&D reference and loved it. Others called it “Disney-fied” and out of place in a God of War game. But the developers have been clear that the initial read misses the point.
Not a Joke — The Design Intent
The most important thing to understand about Phranque comes directly from Game Director Ariel Lawrence. In a WCCFTech interview, Lawrence described the creative challenge at the heart of the character:
“Taking something that feels kind of inanimate and not a person, and really seeing how we could drive connection and story through this character.”
And in the original Destructoid interview, Lawrence expanded on what Phranque's personality actually looks like in practice:
“Phranque has maybe six or seven lines in the trailer, so it's not fully showing the personality because we're not doing that much talking. I would say we're still in development on all of those fronts. We treat Phranque as any companion character. His sincerity, his honesty in the moment, is an integral part of his character, but it doesn't mean he's not serious at all.”
“For us, we want to find his humanity. As we'll find out, the world of Everywhen is not a great place to be right now. So for him, I think it's really about helping Faye see the world for what it truly is. So he's not a joke in that sense.”
Two key takeaways from that answer. First, Phranque's role is to help Faye see the world for what it truly is — which positions him as a guide or truth-teller, not comic relief. Second, the goal is to find his humanity, which implies Phranque has an arc of his own that the game will develop.
Barlog's Vision for Phranque
Cory Barlog expanded on why Phranque has been central to the project from the start, in the IGN exclusive interview:
“Phranque has been a part of every iteration from the very beginning. For me, it was one of the most important parts. Stripped of all of the fantasy elements and the design and the extra stuff, you have a very simple cube, but you're imbuing it with incredible struggle, and sincerity, and genuine personality.”
“Every iteration from the very beginning” is a strong statement. It means Phranque was not added late to lighten the tone. The character was part of the core concept from day one. The design challenge Barlog describes — taking a simple cube and making players care about it — is exactly the kind of risk that defines whether Laufey stands apart or falls flat.
“I hope by the end of this, everyone is emotionally attached to some ribbons and a cube of Jell-O.”
That line from Lawrence — about ribbons (Rue) and a cube (Phranque) — is half joke, half mission statement. The developers are aware of the skepticism. They are choosing to lean into it.
Voice Actor
Phranque is voiced by Jack Quaid(The Boys). Early fan reaction latched onto the contrast immediately: a weird, slippery new companion dropped into one of PlayStation's heaviest mythic series.
Notably, this is not Quaid's first God of War role. He previously voiced Eis in God of War: Sons of Sparta(2026) — a Spartan comrade of young Kratos whose name reveals the origin of Atreus's naming. The casting overlap reinforces Santa Monica Studio's approach to building a consistent voice cast across the franchise, and suggests Quaid's comedic timing and sincerity were a deliberate fit for both characters.
Role in Gameplay
Based on the reveal and developer interviews, Phranque's gameplay role spans three distinct dimensions, as confirmed by Ariel Lawrence in a WCCFTech interview:
- Combat — Joins fights in ways that look more active than a passive mascot role, providing active support during encounters
- Exploration & Traversal — Tied to environmental interaction, mobility, and getting Faye through spaces she cannot navigate alone
- Puzzle-Solving — Involved in solving environmental puzzles, using Phranque's unique physical properties to interact with the world in ways Faye cannot
Beyond mechanics, Phranque also fills narrative roles:
- Story chemistry — Gives Faye someone to bounce off during exploration and quieter beats
- Truth-teller — Lawrence's description of “helping Faye see the world for what it truly is” suggests Phranque may reveal or interpret things Faye cannot perceive on her own
