What is Sons of Sparta?
God of War: Sons of Sparta is a 2D Metroidvania action-platformer and the tenth entry in the God of War series. Developed by Mega Cat Studios in collaboration with Santa Monica Studio, it was released on February 12, 2026 for PlayStation 5 as a digital-only title — announced and launched simultaneously during a State of Play broadcast as part of the franchise's 20th anniversary celebrations.
It is the series' first game developed primarily by an external studio, and the first to return to Greek mythology since God of War: Ascension in 2013. The story serves as a prequel set at the earliest point in the God of War timeline, exploring Kratos' youth before he became the Ghost of Sparta.
Story & Setting
Sons of Sparta is set during Kratos' childhood in Sparta, long before the events of the main series. The narrative follows a young Kratos and his brother Deimos as they navigate the brutal Spartan Agoge — the legendary military training program that forged Spartan warriors. When a fellow trainee named Vasilis goes missing, the brothers set out to find him, uncovering dangers that extend far beyond their training grounds.
The story is framed as a memory — an adult Kratos recounts these events to his daughter Calliope, adding a reflective layer that contrasts the innocent boy he once was with the warrior he would become. This framing device gives the narrative an emotional weight that reviewers consistently highlighted as the game's strongest element.
The game explores the Laconia region of ancient Greece, including:
- Sparta — The central hub and Kratos' home city
- Laconian Forest — Wild terrain surrounding the city
- Oenus Vineyards — Vineyard area with mythological secrets
- Mount Taygetos — The towering mountain above Sparta
- Desolate Plains & Misty Marshes — Dangerous wilderness zones
- Aeaea Island — Home of the witch Circe, who provides equipment upgrades
Gameplay & Combat
As a 2D Metroidvania, Sons of Sparta departs significantly from the series' traditional third-person action format. Key gameplay systems include:
- Spartan Weapons — Since the story predates Kratos obtaining the Blades of Chaos, combat revolves around the Spartan spear (Dory) and shield (Aspis). This fundamentally changes the combat feel — players accustomed to the sweeping chaos of the Blades must adapt to a thrust-and-block style.
- Gifts of Olympus — Special abilities that grant magical attacks and enhanced movement, such as Victory Sandals that boost speed and jumping capability. These function similarly to the magical abilities in the main series but adapted for a 2D environment.
- Crafting & Upgrades— The series' crafting system is preserved in simplified form. Players collect resources to upgrade weapon attachments and amulets (gouri), and earn Blood Orbs (experience) to learn new skills.
- Classic Enemies — The game features a roster of Greek mythological creatures including harpies, minotaurs, gorgons, cyclopes, sirens, satyrs, and new enemies like lampades, lamias, and fauns.
- Pit of Agonies — A local co-op roguelite challenge mode where one player controls Kratos and another controls Deimos. Originally locked behind campaign completion, a post-launch patch added a cheat code to unlock it early.
Cast & Voice Actors
Sons of Sparta features a notable voice cast with several returning series veterans:
- TC Carson as Adult Kratos — His first return to the role since God of War: Ascension (2013)
- Antony Del Rio as Young Kratos (age 13) — Returning from Ghost of Sparta
- Scott Menville as Deimos (age 11) — Kratos' younger brother
- Debi Derryberry as Calliope — Returning from Chains of Olympus and God of War III
- James Mathis III as Konstantinos — The Agoge headmaster
- Shelby Young as Amara — Konstantinos' daughter, an Amazon warrior
- David Errigo Jr. as Brontes — Kratos' rival
- Jack Quaid as Eis (Atreus) — A Spartan comrade whose name reveals the origin of Kratos' son's name
- Zehra Fazal as Circe — The witch who provides equipment upgrades
- Keith Ferguson as The Deckhand — A younger version of the series' recurring Boat Captain character
Notably, Jack Quaid — who voices Phranque in God of War Laufey — also appears in Sons of Sparta as Eis. This casting overlap is not coincidental. In a WCCFTech interview, Game Director Ariel Lawrence revealed that Phranque was one of the two characters Cory Barlog established from the very beginningwhen building Laufey (alongside Faye), and Quaid's prior work as Eis in Sons of Sparta made him a natural fit for the gelatinous companion. The cross-casting reinforces Santa Monica Studio's approach to building a consistent voice cast across the franchise.
Reception & Criticism
Sons of Sparta received a Metacritic score of 64/100 (based on 79 reviews), making it the lowest-rated entry in the God of War series. OpenCritic reports a 29% recommendation rate from 86 reviews.
The critical consensus breaks down along clear lines:
- Praised:Narrative and character writing — multiple reviewers called the story the game's strongest element, with Game Informer noting they were “moved by the ending.” The 2D pixel art environments also received positive attention for their visual design.
- Criticized:Combat quality — described as “floaty and slow” by GamesRadar+, with awkward animations for both characters and enemies. The Metroidvania design was called “basic” by multiple outlets, offering nothing that genre standouts like Hollow Knight or Metroid Dread do not do better.
- Controversial:The game's tone drew mixed reactions. Some reviewers found the anti-bullying themes heartfelt; GamesRadar+ called the narrative “like an anti-bullying PSA.” David Jaffe (series creator) publicly criticized the game for “failing to capture the series' spirit,” calling young Kratos “some boring generic kid.”
At $29.99, the game reached #14 in US all-platform sales and #6 on PlayStation for February 2026. The lower price point compared to full $69.99 releases likely helped its unit sales despite mixed reviews.
Connection to God of War Laufey
Sons of Sparta and God of War Laufey are separate projects with different development teams, but their proximity in the franchise timeline creates several meaningful connections:
- Shared Voice Cast — Jack Quaid appears in both games (as Eis in Sons of Sparta and as Phranque in Laufey), suggesting Santa Monica Studio is building a stable of recurring voice talent across the franchise.
- Franchise Expansion Strategy— Sons of Sparta represents SMS's willingness to let external studios experiment with the God of War brand in different genres, while Laufey represents the core studio pushing the main franchise in a bold new direction. Together, they signal that the God of War universe is expanding beyond a single format.
- Series Lore— Sons of Sparta deepens Kratos' backstory and Greek mythology roots, which provides richer context for understanding why Laufey's shift to Faye as protagonist is so significant. The more you know about Kratos' origins, the more you understand what Faye is stepping into.
- Shared Writers — Both projects share writing talent from the Santa Monica Studio team (Matt Sophos, Richard Zangrande Gaubert, Orion Walker worked on both the Norse-era games and Sons of Sparta), ensuring narrative consistency across the franchise.
