ℹ️ Standalone Game — Richer With Context

Sony has confirmed that God of War Laufey can be enjoyed completely standalone. You do not need to have played the previous games to understand Faye's story. That said, the official recommendation is to play GoW 2018 and Ragnarök “to fully appreciate the world,” since Faye's Everywhen journey runs parallel to the Norse saga.

The Director — Ariel Lawrence

Game Director Ariel Lawrence brings a deep history with the franchise. Originally part of the team behind the original God of War, Lawrence later worked at Riot Games before returning to Santa Monica Studio in July 2021 to lead Laufey. Lawrence frames the series' soul as “an ordinary person's story in an epic mythic world”— a philosophy that explains why Laufey centers on Faye's deeply personal journey rather than another god-slaying power fantasy.
